The addition of the saddle pressure mapping system and high grade camera with specific bike fitting software from GebioMized has lifted my service up another level. The saddle pressure mapping technology has the ability to detect high pressure zones when sitting on the saddle and give clear objective evidence of reducing this pressure through saddle adjustment. This will play a big role in helping clients who complain of saddle sores. It also shows if a rider is unstable on the saddle, i.e too much sway. Once stability is improved, it will lead to improved performance.
GebioMized now have their own range of saddles. Constructed using their research with saddle mapping technology over the past 15 years. These saddles are available at the clinic and can be tested using the pressure mapping device to ensure effectiveness before buying.
Foot pressure mapping is a very insightful piece of technology to see what is going on at the foot/shoe interface. We can see how the pressure is distributed through the foot and more importantly, we can use it as an objective measure to see if an intervention like an in-the-shoe wedge or heel wedge is effective at doing what we want it to do. We can also use the foot pressure mapping to give us an indication of your pedal quality through force/time plots. The force/time plots pick up inefficiencies identified as breaks in the smooth force of the pedal stroke, which can then be addressed through saddle height, saddle position, cleat position etc. A very important add on if the rider is experiencing foot and/or knee pain. Or if the rider wants to see how effective and efficient their pedal stroke is.
The Physio-led bike fit and nutritional advice will be carried out by myself, John Phelan. I have completed Physio-led bike fit training courses under Paul Visentini, a specialist sports physiotherapist in bike performance in 2015, and a cycling rehabilitation course under Robert Brown & Dan Guillemette (lead Physio at Team Sky) in 2016. In 2017, I attended a course in Italy at the Australian Institute for Sport, ran by Paul Visentini and Borut Fonda. Borut is one of the leading researchers into bike fitting.
In October 2018, the International Symposium for Cycling Optimisation was hosted by GebioMized and held in Munster, Germany. This was a 3 day event with speakers from around the world presenting their research in the science of cycling.
I currently attend regular online training with bike fitting partners GebioMized. The previous three courses were:
