What to expect?
This workshop has a lot going on! I have been brewing beer since before my wedding, and that was in 2015! I made the switch to all-grain brewing (using grain and not malt) in 2016 and it really lifted the levels of satisfaction in the product and the brewing process. It is this all grain process that I want to share with you at the workshop. What I should add here is that starting all grain brewing is not overly expensive and all the instruments and vessels needed are easily available and not expensive.
Home brewing and bottling your own really brings out your creative side and they do make the finest of gifts and wedding favours!!

Rather than it being a purely home brewing tutorial, I figured a bike ride would fit very nicely with this workshop. We will be heading out for a 20km ride around the local hills and quiet roads after the monring intros and coffee. This bike ride is entirely optional. The other option is to hang out at the studio and listen to tunes!
What works well with a home brewing workshop? Sampling home brew of course! We'll have the same Dunkel Hefweizen wheat beer available to sample as the one that we will be making. You can bring home a bottle of it too! I'll have a generous selection of other styles of beers, with a nice few porters to go with the Christmas festivities.
For anyone into Kombucha, I'll bring my baby along and we can talk about how to get this great healthy drink up and running.
We also have a superb location for this workshop at our studio with its social corner ideally set up for this kind of thing.
Review from last year: “A great day out for anyone interested in beer and bikes (and who isn’t?). Learned a huge amount about the process of beer making in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, sampled some delicious craft brews, with a nice group ride in the hills around Ballygarvan thrown in. Couldn’t recommend this enough!”
The Agenda:
09:30 Meet at the Life Fit Studio for introductions over coffee. Be in your bike gear because we will be heading out for the ride once we start the brewing process, i.e soak the grain in the mash tun.
Everyone will be given a brewing log sheet for you to put in the measurements at each stage of the brew.
10:30 Bike ride around the local roads for 1 hour.
11:45 Gather around the mash tun for the next phase of the brew where we collect the wort (sugary liquid) from the mashed grain. This takes 1 hour.
12:45 More coffee and/or beer, the choice is yours! We will have a few types of beers available for tasting and also the wheat beer that we are making will be on offer too! This is the start of the boil phase of the brew and again takes 1 hour.
1:45pm Cooling down the brew and pitching the yeast
2:30pm Lunch included (The local Workshop Cafe provide a great soup and sambo)
4pm Good-byes and safe travels. Emphasis on safe. Please cycle or use a taxi if you intend on having a few samples of beer.
